The AspectIX project started in 1997 and was funded as part of the OVEST Project by the Bayerische Forschungsstiftung and various industrial partners (SUN Microsystems Germany, Siemens ATD and 3Soft). At the beginning this project was called LEGOrb, but renamed to AspectIX in mid 1998. The umbrella project OVEST ended with the end of 1999.

At the end of 1998 we got a dedicated IBM Partnership Award from the IBM Zurich Research Lab.

In February 2000, the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft granted three years of funding.

Since 2002, the project is conducted jointly by the University of Ulm and the University Erlangen-Nürnberg. In January 2004, the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft granted two years of further funding.
