Short Description:
DACNOS is a network operating system that addresses two characteristic aspects of todayÕs computing environments: distribution and heterogeneity. DACNOS has aimed at providing efficient and convenient support for the cooperation of homogeneous computing s ystems. DACNOS does not replace the operating system on the machines. Such a step would have made a large base of software worthless. Consequently, the (DAC)NOS is an add-on to the different operating systems that does not interfere with existing applicat ions, but makes it feasible to have access to remote resources in formerly only-local applications. The RFA Remote File System is a part of the project.

Model: heterogeneous, server/client
Properties: UNIX-compatible, lightweight processes
Transparency: location, access, concurrency

Running on:
IBM/370, DEC/VAX, IBM PC

Date:
1990
